Ruth Marie Micinski, 88, of Mishawaka, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Portage Home, South Bend.

Ruth was born January 1, 1929 in Buffalo, New York, to the late Bernard and Clara (Ruschke) Sowinski. She moved to Mishawaka in 1970.

Ruth was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she assisted as a collection counter. She enjoyed bowling and golfing on leagues, traveling, collections and loved animals. Her sense of humor will be missed.

Ruth married Howard Shorts in 1948 and he preceded her in death in 1978. She later married Lionel Micinski in 1989 and he preceded her in death in 1997. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert Sowinski and his son, Mark; and special friend, Marie Leddy.

Ruth’s surviving family includes her daughter, Carolyn Fermoyle and her dog, NeNe, of Mishawaka; her sister, Dorothy (Val) Duszynski of Florida; a sister-in-law, Eileen Sowinski of Nevada; nieces, Diane and Christina; nephew, Paul; great nephews, Jakob, Corey and Cody; special neighbor and his family, Gene, Judy and Carter Lane; long-time special friends, Al and June Gerstbauer; and the Micinski family.

Special thanks go to Heartland Hospice and especially nurse, Donna; and also Paul, Jennifer and Shereen at Portage Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Wednesday, March 22, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 S. Mill Street, Mishawaka, with Rev. Christopher Lapp officiating. Burial next to her first husband, Howard, will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Following the prayers at the cemetery, a luncheon will take place at St. Joseph Elementary School next to the church.

Friends may spend time with Ruth’s family on Tuesday from 1 – 3 pm and 6 – 8 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka.
